Relationship Management in a Remote Work World

Remote work eliminated the casual hallway interactions that maintained professional relationships. Here is how to replace them.

The shift to remote and hybrid work eliminated something professionals took for granted: casual, unstructured interactions. The hallway conversation, the coffee break chat, the lunch with a colleague โ€” these ambient touchpoints maintained relationships without deliberate effort.

What Was Lost

In an office, relationships are maintained passively. You see the same people daily. Small interactions accumulate into familiarity and trust. Remote work replaced this with scheduled meetings and Slack messages โ€” efficient for tasks, inadequate for relationships.

Deliberate Relationship Maintenance

In a remote world, every professional relationship requires deliberate maintenance. The interactions that used to happen naturally now need to be initiated:

  • Virtual coffee chats โ€” 15-minute video calls with no agenda. The explicit purpose is to catch up, not to discuss work. Schedule them like you would schedule a meeting.
  • Async check-ins โ€” Brief messages that would have been hallway conversations: "How was your weekend?" "Saw your presentation went well โ€” nice work." These take 30 seconds and maintain presence.
  • In-person when possible โ€” When you are in the same city, make time to meet in person. One lunch meeting builds more rapport than months of video calls.

The System Becomes Essential

When relationships were maintained passively through office proximity, a CRM was a nice-to-have. In a remote world, it is essential. Without a system tracking who you have connected with and who you have not, important relationships deteriorate without you noticing until it is too late.
