How to Use LinkedIn for Genuine Relationship Building
LinkedIn is not just a resume database. Used well, it is a powerful tool for building and maintaining professional relationships.
Most professionals use LinkedIn in one of two ways: as a passive resume or as a spam cannon. Neither builds relationships. LinkedIn's real value is as a low-friction way to stay connected with hundreds of professional contacts simultaneously.
Engagement Over Broadcasting
Posting content on LinkedIn is less effective than engaging with other people's content. Commenting thoughtfully on a contact's post takes 30 seconds and puts you in their awareness. Sharing their article with your own perspective does the same. These small interactions accumulate into genuine professional presence.
The LinkedIn Routine
Spending 10 minutes per day on LinkedIn is more effective than spending an hour once a week:
- Scan your feed for posts from contacts you want to stay connected with. Comment on 3-5.
- Check notifications for job changes, work anniversaries, and birthdays. Send brief, genuine congratulations.
- Review connection requests. Accept from people you have met or who have a clear professional connection. Decline from strangers who provide no context.
Moving Relationships Off Platform
LinkedIn connections are surface-level until they move to another channel. The goal is to transition promising LinkedIn relationships to email, phone, or in-person meetings. A comment thread that goes back and forth naturally leads to "we should grab coffee" โ and that conversation is where real relationships form.
When you move a LinkedIn connection to a deeper relationship, add them to your CRM. LinkedIn will remind you of their birthdays and job changes, but it will not tell you that you have not had a real conversation in three months. A relationship CRM fills that gap.
